“Painting is alchemy. Its materials are worked without knowledge of their properties, by blind experiment, by the feel of the paint. A painter knows what to do by the tug of the brush as it moves through a mixture of oils, and by the look of colored slurries on the palette.”
James Elkins “What Painting is”
My work is divided between the outdoor on site locations I paint and my studio where I can digest the information I have gathered through sketches, plein air paintings, and recordings.
I begin with plein air studies to immerse myself in the environment. I'm fascinated by optics and the interplay of light on 3d forms and how oil paint along with brush marking can capture a realism and living quality to the work. I strive to keep this loose gestural quality in larger studio pieces.
